Scattered Thunderstorms With 30-58 MPH Gusts and One-Inch Hail Possible Across Central and Northern Indiana Including Fort Wayne and Indianapolis Noon Through Midnight

INDIANA — Scattered thunderstorms are expected again this afternoon and evening across Indiana along a stationary boundary draped across the region, with the storm window running from noon through midnight Wednesday April 22.

A few storms may be strong with gusty winds and small hail, though widespread severe weather is not expected and not everyone will see rain today. The IWO Severe Outlook places central and northern Indiana under a Risk 1 designation, while southern Indiana falls under a General Thunderstorm zone with lower storm intensity expected.

Risk 1 Zone Covers Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and Central Indiana

The Risk 1 designation covers a broad swath of central and northern Indiana including Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and surrounding communities stretching across the central portion of the state. The stationary boundary draped across the region will act as the focal point for storm development during the noon to midnight window, keeping the highest storm chances concentrated along and near that boundary through the day and evening.

Wind gusts of 30 to 58 MPH and hail up to one inch in diameter are the primary hazards within the Risk 1 zone, alongside lightning and heavy downpours that will accompany the stronger cells as they develop during the afternoon hours.

General Thunderstorm Zone Covers Southern Indiana

Southern Indiana including Evansville and Seymour falls under the General Thunderstorm designation, indicating a lower threat level with winds staying below 40 MPH and lightning being the dominant concern. Heavy downpours are also possible across the General T-Storm zone but organized severe weather is not anticipated across the southern portion of the state today…
