New Haven fights loneliness epidemic with summer events, volunteerism

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory report on the country’s battle against an epidemic. It was not written as a warning about COVID or cancer, but penned as a polemic against loneliness.

Titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation”, the first pillar the report recommends is “Strengthen Social Infrastructure in Local Communities.” It is a step that New Haven, Indiana, is taking to heart.

“We talk about a connected community, and when we talk about a connected community, we don’t just mean trails and roads. We mean people coming together,” said New Haven Mayor (R) Steve McMichael. “It’s really important with loneliness, isolationism – particularly with groups 65 and older.”…
