East Bay family to get $60K settlement in disability dispute

(KRON) — A San Leandro family will receive a $60,000 settlement from the owners of their apartment complex after having a disability accommodation request repeatedly ignored, the California Civil Rights Department announced Tuesday.

The complaint against the multi-unit apartment complex owners was filed in 2024. It alleged that the owners “repeatedly ignored a mother’s requests for a different parking space to accommodate the needs of her twin children with disabilities,” CRD wrote. “The request would have roughly cut the distance they had to cover to get to their apartment in half and the tenant who previously had the space had already moved out.”

After the owners received the request, they allegedly blocked off the desired parking space so that the family could not use it. Further requests were also allegedly ignored. Eventually, CRD said, the owners assigned the space to another tenant who moved in, “effectively denying the family’s accommodation request.”

“Under California law, people with disabilities have the right to request exceptions or changes to rules at apartment buildings to help them have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy housing. Failure to engage with a tenant on their reasonable accommodation request is a form of discrimination under the Fair Employment and Housing Act,” CRD wrote…
