MOUNTAIN VIEW – Chris Stapleton owned the South Bay from the moment he stepped onstage at Shoreline Amphitheatre on Wednesday night. From the opening notes of the “Bad As I Used To Be” riff, Stapleton reminded why he’s one of the most respected country rock artists.
Firstly, Stapleton infuses his writing and singing with an authentic soul that comes from the chest. As ballad rolled into ballad, and the evening ebbed and swayed, Stapleton’s voice held up to the often ridiculous demands of his music. His voice, which sounded like an amalgamation of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes, growled with grittiness and his vocal control was on full display during songs like “I Was Wrong” and “Tennessee Whiskey.”
Roughly 20,000 voices attempted to sing “You’re as warm as a glass of brandy.” Only Stapled nailed the important enunciation of “warm.”…
