Remnants of Tropical Storm Elida will nudge closer to the California coast Tuesday, keeping clouds and a slight chance of rain in the forecast, though temperatures are a wildcard.
Elida’s low pressure, though weak at this point in its life-cycle, is expected to disrupt the typical afternoon sea breeze that keeps San Francisco’s summers colder than any other major U.S. city. On a normal summer day, there is higher pressure off the coast and lower pressure in the Central Valley, and winds follow this pattern, flowing through the Golden Gate and across San Francisco Bay.
But Tuesday will be an exception, as the proximity of Elida’s low pressure could shut down or even reverse the typical wind direction in San Francisco. That should allow temperatures to push into the 70s downtown, with some areas reaching the low 80s if enough sunshine emerges. Oakland should reach the mid-80s.
The Peninsula will certainly be toasty, with 90-degree readings possible around San Carlos and Redwood City. Eastern portions of Marin County will be similarly warm. In the interior North Bay, East Bay and South Bay, highs will push well into the 90s…
