Bay Area city admits to sending nearly $1M to scammers

The city of Pittsburg on Wednesday admitted that it sent $913,000 in February to a scammer masquerading as a city vendor.

The city in east Contra Costa County disclosed the costly mistake after investigators — which involved the FBI — said public notification would not compromise the investigation.

The money was sent Feb. 12, and when city staff realized it was fraudulent on Feb. 17, they notified the Pittsburg Police Department, which got the FBI and the Contra Costa County authorities involved…
