(KRON) — A 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle stolen in San Mateo more than three decades ago was recently recovered and reunited with its original owner, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.
The classic car apparently made its way to Placer County after being stolen from its owner in 1993. There, CHP officers with the Auburn Area office were conducting a VIN inspection when they “noticed something that warranted a closer look.”

“Further investigation revealed the vehicle standing in front of them was the same 1971 Chevelle reported stolen 33 years ago,” CHP said. The San Mateo Police Department assisted in confirming the car’s history.
With the stolen classic recovered, investigators were able to “do something that probably seemed impossible after all these years – reunite the Chevelle with its original owner,” CHP said. “After more than three decades, this classic is finally back where it belongs.”…
