SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Waymo has received approval to expand its service across what appears to be the entire San Francisco Bay Area. On Friday, the autonomous taxi company said its application to expand service had been approved by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Friday’s announced approval also included to expand Waymo service in Los Angeles, and for future service in San Diego and Sacramento.
“This is an important milestone that will allow Waymo to bring the safety and mobility benefits millions of Californians already enjoy to more communities across the state,” a Waymo spokesperson said. “Recent data from over 220 million fully autonomous miles — the equivalent of over 250 human lifetimes of driving — demonstrates Waymo is involved in an estimated 94% fewer serious injury collisions.”
Previously, Waymo received approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to expand its service across the same areas announced in Friday’s CPUC approval.
