California is in the middle of a chain-restaurant contraction. Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Jack in the Box, Peet’s, and Starbucks are all trimming North American footprints in the first half of 2026, and the Peninsula is feeling the edges. The most-hyped April headline — Bahama Breeze closing 14 of its 28 locations by April 5 — is a non-event here. The chain has zero California stores. The real story sits closer to home.

1. Wendy’s — 1852 El Camino Real, Redwood City.

Closed early February after 22 years. Roughly 15 staff displaced. Six miles up El Camino from Menlo Park, this is the closest fast-food chain casualty. Why: Part of Wendy’s “Project Fresh,” which is closing an estimated 298–358 U.S. stores (5–6% of the system) by mid-2026. California Wendy’s count dropped from ~300 to ~290 in weeks. Redwood City’s Economic Development Manager Amanda Anthony told RWC Pulse the city has “seen interest from more popular, current fast food chains that want to move to Redwood City.”

2. Peet’s Coffee — 153 Homer Ave, Downtown Palo Alto.

Closed January 30 as part of ~30 Bay Area Peet’s shutterings tied to Keurig Dr Pepper’s $18B JDE Peet’s acquisition. The reversal: Reopened in early April after the landlord signed a lease extension.
