Bay-view trails close to home that fit one free evening — sunset hits around 8:10 p.m. this week.
Some weeks the only window for yourself is the one between work pickup and bedtime stories, or a rare Saturday when the kids are at their dad’s. Hayward has a handful of trails that pay off in under an hour, and a couple of them landed on KQED’s roundup of the Bay Area’s best sunset hikes. Here are four honest picks — no padding.
1. Cogswell Marsh Loop — Hayward Regional Shoreline (West Hayward)
The flat 2.9-mile loop circles a 250-acre tidal marsh that was restored back in 1980, one of the earliest restorations in the Bay.
AllTrails clocks it around 55 minutes, easy, 4.5 stars from 337+ reviews. The view stretches from the SF skyline to the Santa Cruz Mountains to Mt. Diablo, and EBRPD calls out godwits, avocets, and great blue herons along the way. KQED featured it on its sunset-hike list. The trail is fully exposed and well-trafficked at golden hour — comforting if you’re walking alone. Heads up: the West Winton lot has been reported to close at 5 p.m., so park at the Grant Avenue staging area for evening access. No dogs allowed (endangered shorebirds nest here). 3010 W Winton Ave. Free.
## 2. Shoreline Out-and-Back to Hayward’s Landing — when you only have 30 minutesSame park, smaller ask. About 0.57 miles each way from the West Winton trailhead to the Hayward’s Landing lookout — roughly 25 to 30 minutes round-trip.
Wide-open bay sunset, no commitment. Yelp’s Hayward Regional Shoreline page (50+ reviews, updated December 2025) lists “sunset view” as a noted feature. Free…
