A 17-year-old boy is in custody after Fresno police say he robbed a victim at gunpoint in Southeast Fresno, racking a handgun before running off with the victim’s belongings, including a laptop. Officers eventually tracked him down roughly three miles away, closing out a case that started with a chaotic scene near Butler Avenue and South Fifth Street.
Armed Robbery Reported Near Butler and Fifth
According to the Fresno Police Department, officers responded to reports of an armed robbery near East Butler Avenue and South Fifth Street on August 31 at approximately 7:01 p.m. The department says the victim was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown suspect who racked a handgun during the encounter, then fled westbound on Butler Avenue. Investigators say the suspect took the victim’s belongings, including a laptop, before disappearing from the scene.
Officers and detectives went to work identifying the suspect in the days that followed, per the same Fresno Police Department report. The department has not said what evidence or leads led investigators to a name, but the effort culminated in an arrest well outside the immediate area of the robbery.
Southeast District Safety Team Makes the Arrest
Members of the Southeast District Safety Team located and arrested the suspect near East McKinley Avenue and North Chestnut Avenue, the department’s report states. That arrest site sits roughly three miles northeast of the Butler Avenue and Fifth Street crime scene, according to a City of Fresno document describing the area, with both locations sitting along major commercial and residential corridors in East-Central Fresno.
District Safety Teams operate within each of Fresno’s policing districts, including the Southeast District, to conduct targeted enforcement, pursue wanted felony suspects, and carry out high-visibility patrols, the Fresno Police Department has explained in a separate post on its Facebook page. The unit’s role in this case reflects a broader pattern of enforcement in a district that has drawn sustained police attention. Hoodline previously reported on an August robbery near Belmont Avenue and Third Street in which suspects attacked a pedestrian and stole an iPhone, part of what police describe as ongoing efforts to address street robberies in the district.
Southeast Fresno’s Violent Crime Backdrop
A multi-year academic study published in PubMed Central analyzing Fresno Police Department crime data from 2014 through mid-2023 found that the Southeast District consistently recorded one of the city’s highest concentrations of gun-related assaults and homicides, trailing only the Southwest district. The Fresno Police Department’s Southeast Policing District serves a densely populated part of southern Fresno and coordinates with community service officers, neighborhood watch groups, and specialized units to address violent crime, according to information compiled by the City of Fresno…
