A late-night patrol on June 3 turned into a tense few minutes on northbound I-35E when Lewisville officers moved in on a driver who, police say, was weaving across lanes, nearly hitting other vehicles and ignoring flashing lights and sirens. According to officers, the motorist passed up several safe spots to pull over and kept rolling, which led to a short pursuit on the interstate before traffic finally brought the car to a stop and the driver was taken into custody.
Video Shows Erratic Driving and Refusal to Stop
Bodycam and dash video released by the Lewisville Police Department shows the car drifting across multiple lanes, squeezing between other vehicles and coming uncomfortably close to side-swiping traffic. In the footage, officers activate lights and sirens and try several times to get the driver to pull over, yet the car keeps moving past open shoulders and exits.
At one point, the suspect can be heard telling officers, “I just wanted to go home,” according to Lewisville Police Department. The department’s post states the driver had been drinking before the stop and that officers ultimately arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and evading arrest with a vehicle.
Charges and Legal Context
Under Texas law, trying to make a run for it in a car is not a minor detail. Texas Penal Code § 38.04 notes that evading arrest in a vehicle can bump the charge up to a state jail or higher-level felony, depending on prior convictions and whether anyone is hurt.
