Marion County officials will conduct an initial review of a proposed ordinance on Monday evening that would create a 12-month, temporary moratorium on the creation of new data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations, and artificial intelligence computing facilities across the area.
The Marion County Planning and Zoning Commission will review the proposed ordinance during its regular meeting on Monday, August 31. Because the zoning commission is an advisory board, its vote is simply a recommendation on the matter that will be presented to the Marion County Board of County Commissioners, who will make the final decision on the topic.
If approved by the planning commission and ultimately adopted by the Board of County Commissioners, the ordinance would immediately halt the acceptance, processing, review, and approval of all rezonings, site plans, conditional use permits, and building permits related to data center facilities for up to one year…
