Bodycam Captures Terrifying Standoff With Knife-Wielding Man in Surprise

Newly released body-camera footage shows the tense moments before Surprise police shot a man who officers say threatened a child with a knife near Cactus Road and 151st Avenue. The video, made public Monday, captures a drawn-out standoff that began after a 911 caller reported an intoxicated man making suicidal threats while children were inside the home. Officers eventually opened fire, and the man was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

In the footage, an officer repeatedly tries to talk the man down while he curses and presses the knife to his own throat. At one point, he smacks the blade against a porch railing and shouts threats. The 911 caller told dispatchers there were multiple children in the house, including one as young as 6, and that the man had said he would kill anyone who came inside, as reported by Arizona’s Family.

Surprise police say the response started just after 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 11 near 151st Avenue and West Cactus Road, after officers were dispatched to the 911 call. No officers were hurt.
