West Michigan student wins skilled trades scholarship

GRAND HAVEN — As Michigan wrestles with a persistent shortage of skilled labor, one local student is getting a financial boost to help bridge the gap.

The SET SEG Foundation announced that Grand Haven High School senior Brad Schmoekel has been awarded a $1,000 Skilled Trades Scholarship to pursue his education in welding.

Schmoekel is one of only 20 public school students statewide — and the sole recipient in the West Michigan region — selected for the honor this year…
