Crews to start fix Monday on US-131 pothole near Grand Rapids

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A double lane closure will go into effect on a short stretch of US-131 north of Grand Rapids Monday as crews start fixing a hole in an overpass.

Starting at 9 a.m. Monday, one northbound travel lane will be blocked off between North Park Street and West River Drive in Plainfield Township. The dedicated exit lane before West River has been closed since the hole formed. The left travel lane will remain open, as will the exit ramp itself.

Pothole prompts lane closures on US-131 north of Grand Rapids

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman John Richard said crews will pour concrete to fix the bridge deck. MDOT has scheduled nine days for the repair, but Richard said it’s possible it could be finished early. The repair work is weather-dependent, Richard noted.

The pothole — technically called a spall because it’s on a bridge deck — formed May 27 on the highway overpass over West River. A pile of rubble could be seen along the White Pine Trail under the overpass.

The West River Drive exit serves LMCU Ballpark. Crews were going to start the double lane closure June 1, but delayed it until the West Michigan Whitecaps were on the road. They return home June 16…
