Deputies investigate as license plate reader vandalism increases

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Kent County Sheriff’s deputies say they are seeing more cases of people vandalizing license plate readers known as Flock cameras.

One on Post Drive in Plainfield Township was recently damaged for a second time. Only the base of the device remains after the license place reader was sawed down like a tree. Deputies removed the device as part of their investigation, they said.

Kent County Sheriff’s Capt. Joel Roon says the camera had just been replaced after it was smashed. He also said there are better ways for the public to voice their concerns about the devices.

“We really welcome those conversations. There’s definitely a right way to protest and express your opinion and we just really encourage people to do that through appropriate channels like township meetings or county board meetings or even just voicing those concerns right here to our office.
