Boxing gym offers juvenile offenders a second chance

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — First acts don’t define a film, but they can make or break them. In the same sense, teenage mistakes don’t set a life in stone — at least according to Frank Briones, youth specialist with the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.

“I think one of the biggest things that I see and I tell our kids … is that mistakes don’t define who you are,” Briones said. “Mistakes are not going to write your story. It’s about getting those chances and opportunities to show people that you do have the potential.”

His efforts to improve outcomes for teenagers coming through the system has brought him to local gyms before, but lack of buy-in bottomed out the program. Last year, he finally found his champion in Shadez Butler…
