Office-to-apartments conversion on Grand Rapids’ West Side expected to begin in August

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A portion of a three-story office building on Grand Rapids’ West Side is set to be converted into apartments by Rockford, a construction, development and property management firm based in the city.

The Grand Rapids Planning Commission on Thursday approved Rockford’s request to convert part of the first and second floors of 614 First St. NW into 12 one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom apartment.

Mike Mraz, chief investment officer at Rockford, said construction on the $2.65 million project is expected to start in August and be complete by the end of the year. The office space that’s being converted has been vacant since the building opened in 2018, he said…
