It’s been a tough couple of months for popular Mexican restaurant On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. The restaurant, which has two locations in West Michigan, at Woodland Mall and Rivertown Crossings Mall, filed for bankruptcy last year and closed around 40 stores, according to The Street.

For many businesses, filing for bankruptcy is like digging an early grave. But that wasn’t necessarily the case for On the Border. It was bought by a new company that continued to close restaurants but did manage to bring the chain out of bankruptcy.
That is, until an announcement this week that all remaining locations will be closing, including the Grand Rapids locations.
Grand Rapids On the Border Locations Closing
In a surprise announcement this week, despite On the Border successfully exiting bankruptcy, On the Border Hospitality released a statement to WOODTV 8, stating:
“On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has made the difficult decision to move forward with a significant transition in its restaurant operations, which will include the closing of company-owned locations by end of day Friday, June 12, 2026,”
