Planning commission OKs ‘café by day, bar by evening’ in Creston neighborhood

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new bar and café known as “The Hoxie” could open this year in Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood.

On Thursday, the Grand Rapids Planning Commission approved a special land use request for the project. The Hoxie will be located on the ground floor of the historic Hoxie building at 1415 Plainfield Ave. NE near Caledonia Street NE, which is more than a century old.

“We’re just looking for a little, modest café by day, bar by evening,” The Hoxie owner and operator Angela Tramper said at Thursday’s planning commission meeting.

From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Hoxie will operate as a counter-service café, according to plans included in city agenda documents. The menu will include espresso-based drinks, teas, pastries, salads and sandwiches…
