A Glimpse of Africa Festival returns to Grand Rapids, but in a scaled-back format

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A West Michigan nonprofit’s annual celebration of African culture will return this month in a scaled-back format after organizers weighed the financial and staffing challenges facing the organization.

A Glimpse of Africa says it will host a free, half-day festival from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Calder Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids. The event, which in previous years has been held over two days, will feature live entertainment, authentic African cuisine, an artisan marketplace, community resources and the festival’s signature African flag ceremony.
