GRCC: Expanded tuition program would ‘remove barriers’

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to make community college free for all high school graduates, a plan that Grand Rapids Community College says would benefit students and the economy.

GRCC is still awaiting the details of the proposal that the governor pitched in her State of the State address last week, but says that if put into place by the state Legislature, it will make college more accessible across the state.

Going back to college has become easier for many students through programs already in place, like Michigan Reconnect . More than 20 years after graduating high school, Lauren Cavote is in her first semester at Grand Rapids Community College with Michigan Reconnect covering her tuition.

“I wanted an education. I wanted to have a degree,” Cavote said. “I wasn’t looking at this as something available to me and when I learned about the program, did a little research, it was the opportunity.”
