Thousands lost power in West Michigan as high winds knock down power lines

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — Thousands of Consumers Energy customers are without power Monday afternoon as high winds cause downed trees and power lines.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for Kalamazoo County (lasting until 5:30 p.m.) and Kent County (lasting until 6 p.m.), with chances for wind gusts between 60-70 mph.

As of 6:41 p.m. on Monday, more than 70,000 Consumers Energy customers are without power. Here are where the most outages are in West Michigan:

  • 7,972 customers are without power in Ottawa County
  • 15,688 customers are without power in Kalamazoo County
  • 2,762 customers are without power in Allegan County
  • 4,080 customers are without power in Kent County
  • 4,137 customers are without power in St. Joseph County
  • 19,441 customers are without power in Calhoun County

Consumers Energy said earlier in the day that they had more than 300 crews stationed to respond to the howling winds…
