Groundbreaking ceremony held for new West Michigan tunnel

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for a new pedestrian tunnel under Northland Drive north of Grand Rapids.

The new pedestrian tunnel will run under Northland Drive NE at Rogue River Drive, providing a connection to the South Rogue River Trail. The tunnel is the another portion of the decadeslong Grand River Greenway project.

The $10 million project was funded through the American Rescue Plan award via a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant to Downtown Grand Rapids Inc.

“This groundbreaking represents more than the start of construction — it’s about connection,” Kent County Parks Department Director Ben Swayze said in a statement. “We are connecting communities, parks and people while removing a significant safety barrier along one of the busiest roads in northern Kent County. This project brings us one step closer to a seamless regional trail network that improves the quality of life and expands access to the outdoors for residents of all ages and abilities.”…
