Whimsical Grand Rapids parade celebrates beloved wand-waving wizard on skates

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A whimsical tribute to one of downtown Grand Rapids’ most unusual figures returned Saturday, drawing dozens of costumed participants to Rosa Parks Circle.

The second annual Rolling Wizard Parade, which began May 23 shortly after 1 p.m., celebrates a mysterious rollerblading character known locally as the “Rolling Wizard.”

The bearded skater — clad in a purple robe, kind eyes peering through rounded glasses — has quietly built a following over the past few years by gliding through downtown, handing out stickers, posing for photos and surprising people with small, joyful encounters…
