Parents scramble as the Children’s Center in Asheboro plans to close: ‘Families were crying with us’

ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — An Asheboro childcare center is shutting its doors with only two weeks’ notice for parents and employees.

The Children’s Center on East Salisbury Street in Asheboro notified parents and staff that they were closing on Thursday. Their last day of business will be on May 29.

Financial Struggle

Center Director Debbie Longhart said financial issues are putting the center out of business. She said facility owners decided after rising costs for food, utilities and gas were costing them thousands of dollars over the last few years.

Interactive Resource Center in Greensboro sees increase in services over last year

Beverly Waugh spent her childhood at the facility. She brings her two-year-old son there to experience a similar upbringing that she holds fond memories of.

Waugh said the short notice leaves her few options to find new childcare. She is worried about the long enrollment waitlists at other facilities. She is also concerned that enrolling her son in a new center will be a challenge…
