According to Durant Ashmore, historical consultant and battlefield preservationist, there are 100 battlefields within 50 miles of Laurens County and hundreds more throughout the state – a tie with New Jersey for the highest number of Revolutionary War battlefields known today.
Hammond’s Store in Clinton provides the latest location confirmed as a battlefield site in Laurens County and shines a light on the rich history in the region.
“We have known roughly where the battlefield was for quite some time but the exact location was not known,” Ashmore said. “We knew it was on private property and I got permission to investigate. I contacted researchers with SCAR (South Carolina Archaeological Research) and they spent five weekends scouring the area.”…
