Salvation Army redesigns new Greenville shelter, needs $2.5M to reach funding goal

The Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties has unveiled new designs for the multimillion-dollar renovation of its shelter campus on Rutherford Street near downtown Greenville.

The organization plans to build a new 42,000-square-foot shelter for people experiencing homelessness called the “Center of Hope.” The campus, located at 417 Rutherford St., currently consists of a men’s shelter and a separate shelter for women and children.

Bea Walters Smith, director of community relations and development for The Salvation Army in Greenville, said the campus’s existing buildings are more than 60 years old and have been “significantly over-loved.” The emergency shelter currently operates at full capacity daily with a waiting list…
