HARRISBURG, Pa. — For Alicia Sanders, remembering her father is about remembering his positive outlook on life.
Her father is Earl F. Detweiler, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient who lost his leg fighting in Europe. After years of being separated, Sanders was reunited with some of her father’s war memorabilia, including a “ruptured duck” lapel pin signifying his honorable discharge.
“He always saw the best in any situation that he was going through. He would always say, ‘Some people have it worse,'” explained Sanders while talking about her father. “And with his leg, [he] never complained. Not one day did he complain about it. And he said, actually, ‘I’m lucky.’ He said, ‘Some of my buddies came home in body bags.’ And he said, ‘All I did was lose a leg.’ He was a great guy.”…
