Pa. fire chiefs say equipment costs, volunteer shortages have put service in ‘crisis’

Carlisle Borough’s two fire companies are sometimes forced to send a fire truck to a job with only one or two firefighters on it — despite the national standard recommending three to four firefighters.

“It’s not safe for the firefighters, and it’s not safe for the civilians that we’re out trying to help,” said Randy O’Donnell, fire chief for the Borough of Carlisle. The problem: volunteers are in short supply while fire equipment keeps on becoming more expensive.

“It’s just not a Carlisle thing,” O’Donnell says. “It’s everywhere.”…
