Harrisburg’s old federal courthouse is poised for a big transformation

After a multi-year wait, interior demolition work will start within the month at the former federal courthouse in downtown Harrisburg where a developer has grand plans for the tower’s mixed-use future.

That’s a major milestone in the life cycle of one of the capital city’s most prominent downtown buildings, and it could give a jolt of momentum to broader revitalization efforts.

Developer Yasser Helal’s plan is to convert the 11-story former courthouse and federal office building at Third and Walnut Streets into a residential tower with somewhere between 140 to 162 apartments…
