Fire chiefs all over the commonwealth are sounding the alarm over what they say is a crisis that threatens the safety of millions of Pennsylvanians, and we would do well to listen.

Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline is struggling to replace his aging fleet as prices soar. A ladder truck that cost $932,000 in 2014 now costs more than $2 million, and it takes longer to acquire one.

Carlisle Fire Chief Randy O’Donnell says he often doesn’t have enough firefighters to respond to a major blaze. Sometimes he says he is forced to send a fire truck with only one or two firefighters. He’s supposed to send three or four firefighters…
