Philadelphia police operate 137 automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, at fixed locations across the city, according to PhillyVoice. Patrol vehicles carry the technology too.
PhillyVoice reported that a citywide count, based on crowd-sourced mapping, puts the overall number of readers as high as 656. Those maps show devices positioned on bridges, in parking lots and around Temple University’s campus.
Harrisburg Debates New Restrictions
The local count comes as Pennsylvania lawmakers consider statewide limits on the cameras. As of early September, legislators in both parties had introduced at least nine bills to restrict or ban automated license plate readers.
