HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Measures to slow cars and protect pedestrians on Front Street along Harrisburg’s river could include transferring ownership of the road from the state to the city, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) has suggested.
“We are supportive of the city taking ownership of Front Street from the state and adding additional traffic lights and installing traffic-calming measures on Front Street,” Shapiro said Monday, while speaking at an event about plans to revitalize the city. “We think that’ll be important.”

Safety of the street has been under scrutiny since a pedestrian was struck and killed despite crossing Front Street, despite using a crosswalk that also has overhead signage with flashing yellow lights.
“I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous Front Street can be,” Shapiro said. His wife, First Lady “Lori thought I was crazy on Saturday when I was going like this to the cars on Front Street that were whizzing by,” he said, making a slow-down gesture with both hands, “as we were walking our dogs on Saturday morning.”…
