Historical marker commemorating Conewago Canel unveiled

YORK HAVEN, Pa. (WHTM) — There was a big weekend reveal in York Haven.

A new state historical marker was unveiled in front of the Northeastern York County History and Preservation Office, commemorating the Conewago Canal.

It was the first working canal in Pennsylvania. Opening in 179, it allowed boats to bypass the Conewago Falls, a rocky stretch of the Susquehanna River where the water level dropped almost 20 feet in a quarter mile.

The canal has long since been covered over, but leaders say it’s remembered as the beginning of the extensive Pennsylvania canal system, which carried goods well into the 20th century…
