Nonprofit closes that brought volunteer writing coaches to tens of thousands of East Bay students

A program that launched 26 years ago at Berkeley High School to help students improve their writing, and grew into a nonprofit that trained more than 5,600 volunteers and served over 42,000 students from Oakland to El Sobrante, has now shut down.

WriterCoach Connection’s last day of operation was May 29, the group announced in a statement on its website, citing ongoing financial challenges as the reason for the closure.

But it might not be wholly dead yet…
