(KRON) — An investigation is underway after an inmate was found dead at the Martinez Detention Center. A deputy sheriff at the facility intake discovered the inmate unresponsive in a room at 9:06 a.m. Thursday, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

Health services medical staff were summoned and deputies performed life saving measures until they arrived. The fire department and an ambulance also responded, the sheriff’s office said.
The inmate was pronounced dead by paramedics. The CoCo County Sheriff’s Office identified him as 40-year-old Patrick Smith. He had been arrested the previous day by Walnut Creek PD and booked on narcotics charges.
