Rain fuels rise of mice, rats in East Bay homes

CONCORD, Calif. ( KRON ) — Rats and mice are being seen coming indoors during the recent wet weather. In Contra Costa County, residents have seen a sharp increase in rats and mice inside homes this winter.

Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District says that in January the number of calls they received about mice and rats was more than double what they saw in January of last year. They say the wet weather is to blame.

“We are seeing an increase in mouse and rat service requests, but we know it’s because of the rain,” said Nola Woods of the Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District (CCMVCD).

During the rainy season, rodents often spread out searching for dry places to hide and for food to eat. To keep them from getting indoors, CCMVCD recommends closing any holes or gaps that lead into your home, replacing damaged vent screens, trimming back bushes and shrubs and making sure tree branches are cut back to at least four feet away from the building.
