Spring hits different out here. The fog burns off by 11, the estuary’s calm, and every bike lane from Temescal to the Coliseum starts filling up. You don’t need carbon fiber or a Strava addiction to ride the East Bay. You need a route, a view, and somewhere to land afterward. Here’s the shortlist.
Lake Merritt Loop. 3.1 miles around a 155-acre urban lake, ~42 feet of elevation.
Flat, paved, wheelchair-accessible. You can do it in an hour. The 1913 Pergola at 599 El Embarcadero, designed by Walter Reed, is still the prettiest stretch of the loop. Beginner energy, but the people-watching is peak Oakland. Post-ride, roll up Broadway to Drake’s Dealership at 2325 Broadway — old Dodge dealership on Auto Row, now 32 beers on tap, fire pits, Adirondack chairs, wood-fired pizza.
Ample bike parking at The Hive.
Bay Bridge Trail to Yerba Buena Island. 2.2 miles each way from the Caltrans Bridge Yard at 210 Burma Rd. Seven observation belvederes with views of SF, the Port cranes, and the whole bay. Span’s open 6 AM–9 PM. Pair it with a roll through Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (2777 Middle Harbor Rd) — 38 acres, 2+ miles of flat paths, and the Chappell R. Hayes Observation Tower.
Views that were off-limits to the public for 100 years. That matters…
