For the past two years, UC Berkeley senior Math Heramia has been living at Anchor House in Downtown Berkeley. And for the past two years, Heramia and his friends have been waiting for the Shake Shack on the ground floor to open.
When Shake Shack announced plans to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Heramia and his friends rented a tent, bought pizza and camped out in front of the restaurant Monday evening.
“We always had this plan of going to sleep out the first night,” Heramia said. “We waited two years for Shake Shack, so we’re going to make sure we’re the first in line.”
Meanwhile, Jose Valentin Rafael, the general manager of the new Shake Shack location, decided to swing by to check on the cleaning crew on the eve of the grand opening. Surprised by Heramia’s group outside the restaurant, he gave them “a bunch of vouchers” and $15 gift cards, according to Heramia…
