A tragic skydiving accident occurred over the weekend in Washington state, resulting in the death of Randy Hubbs, a seasoned jumper from the Kennewick area. The fatal collision happened mid-air during a group dive near Colville, according to the Adams County sheriff’s office.
Authorities report that Hubbs collided with fellow skydiver Nicole Klein at approximately 500 feet above ground level. Following the impact, Hubbs became unresponsive and lost control of his parachute canopy.
Despite efforts to track his descent, he drifted away from the designated drop zone before disappearing behind a hill. Klein sustained injuries and received medical treatment.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that 11 other jumpers were part of the scheduled group dive at West Plains Skydiving, where the incident took place. Both Hubbs and Klein were experienced skydivers, with Hubbs having completed around 800 jumps and Klein approximately 900. Officials do not believe wind conditions contributed to the accident and continue to investigate the exact cause.
“We offer our deepest condolences to those impacted by this incident,” the Adams County sheriff’s office stated in their Facebook update.
In an unrelated but equally tragic event over Memorial Day weekend, Dana Weinger, 56, died after being struck by a flying patio umbrella at a lakeside restaurant in Summerton, South Carolina. While dining on the Driftwood Grill’s patio, a sudden gust of wind dislodged the heavy umbrella, which struck Weinger in the head and neck area. The incident left witnesses and her husband in shock.
Both incidents serve as somber reminders of the unpredictable dangers that can arise in outdoor recreational activities. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.
