Nearly half of the performers originally scheduled for the Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., have withdrawn just days after the lineup was announced, sparking controversy among supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Notable artists such as The Commodores, Young MC, Milli Vanilli, and most recently country singer Martina McBride, known for hits like “Independence Day” and “My Baby Loves Me,” have all decided not to participate in the event organized under the Trump administration.
While many fans of McBride praised her decision, some Trump supporters expressed their frustration. Richard Grenell, the Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions of the United States, criticized McBride on social media, labeling her as a “woke Lefty.”
The exchange intensified when Tommy Vietor, a former member of Barack Obama’s National Security Council and cohost of Pod Save America, remarked that the festival’s situation was “getting sad” due to the dropouts. Grenell retorted, accusing Vietor’s side of intolerance and questioning why political differences prevent coexistence.
Fox News commentator Todd Starnes also weighed in, challenging McBride’s consistency by pointing out her past performances at the White House during the Obama and Clinton administrations.
In response, Martina McBride issued a public statement explaining her withdrawal. She emphasized that she initially believed the event to be a nonpartisan celebration of all 50 states, akin to traditional state fairs she has performed at before. However, she stated that the nature of the event changed and no longer aligned with the assurances she was given.
McBride expressed regret that some fans might interpret her decision as abandoning the values behind her music, which often highlights real people and their struggles. She reassured her supporters that this was not her intention and expressed hope to return to the D.C. area in the near future.
The situation highlights the deep political divisions currently affecting cultural events and public figures alike.
