North Carolina Officer Fired After Shocking Video Shows Woman Punched on Ground

Additional Coverage:

A police officer has been dismissed following the release of a viral video showing him wrestling a Black woman to the ground and repeatedly striking her. The incident occurred in Selby, a small city near North Carolina’s southern border, and has since ignited protests demanding accountability.

The footage, captured by a motion-activated home security camera, shows the officer grappling with the woman before punching her multiple times. As the struggle unfolds, the woman can be heard saying, “I don’t have a warrant,” and asking, “What are you doing?” Despite her pleas and requests for mental health assistance and to contact her father, officers proceeded to attempt handcuffing her.

Gregory Moore, the woman’s father, identified her as his 34-year-old daughter and expressed deep distress over the incident. “I was so upset…

Why is this man doing this to my daughter? What reason?

And she’s sick,” Moore said. He revealed that his daughter battles mental health and substance abuse issues and did not physically resist the officers.

Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser confirmed the officer’s termination following an administrative inquiry, emphasizing that the conduct shown does not align with the department’s values. “As a lifelong resident of this community, I care deeply about the residents we serve and the reputation of this department,” Fraser stated during a press conference. “This incident reinforces the importance of holding ourselves to the highest standards of conduct.”

The woman sustained injuries including a broken nose, black eyes, and a cut lip, and is undergoing evaluation for a possible concussion. Her attorney, Ronald Haynes Jr., condemned the officer’s actions, highlighting the broader impact on community trust. “This has devastated our community and furthered the distrust between the African American community and the police,” Haynes said.

Moore shared his concerns about the lasting effects on his daughter, who is now in a safe place and resting. “She’s going to be scarred the rest of her life,” he said. “When she sees a police officer, that’s what she’s going to think about … so she ain’t going to be able to trust no man, no police officer, nothing anymore.”

The exact circumstances leading up to the altercation remain unclear, as the video only captures the encounter once it begins. The incident continues to prompt calls for justice and reflection on policing practices in the community.
