Cat Left Alone in Heatwave with Only a Heartbreaking Note

Additional Coverage:

A routine drive home turned into a heartwarming rescue when a woman noticed something unusual beside a stop sign on a blistering hot day in Long Island, New York. What initially appeared to be an abandoned pet carrier sparked her concern.

Having previously adopted a cat from the Northport Cat Rescue Association, the woman couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Living just a few blocks away, she returned with her son to take a closer look.

To their surprise, faint meowing came from inside the carrier. Inside, they found a four-year-old cat-later named Mittens-left without food or water amid the sweltering heat.

Attached to the carrier was a handwritten note and a black beaded cross. The note revealed that Mittens was born in Kentucky and described her as a gentle and affectionate cat, ending with a heartbreaking plea: “Please look after me.”

Lora Wild, director of the rescue organization, expressed uncertainty about how long Mittens had been abandoned, saying, “It could have been two hours. It could have been two days.” Deeply moved, the woman brought Mittens home, providing a safe space while reaching out to local rescue groups.

Once inside, Mittens immediately drank water, showing signs of prolonged dehydration. A few days later, Northport Cat Rescue Association arranged for her placement with a foster family.

Despite her ordeal, Mittens has remained remarkably loving and affectionate. Lora described her as “the sweetest cat” who quickly sought out attention and affection.

The rescue suspects that Mittens’ previous owner cared deeply for her but may have faced difficult circumstances, noting, “Whoever had her definitely loved her. They must have been desperate.” Still, the organization stresses that abandoning animals in this way endangers their lives and should never be an option when safer alternatives exist.

Now safe and comfortable, Mittens is officially up for adoption. She is reported to get along well with children and dogs and would fit seamlessly into a variety of homes.

Lora added, “Anyone who meets her would fall in love with her. She would be a wonderful addition to any family.”

Following the story’s spread on social media, many animal lovers expressed gratitude and concern. Comments included calls for more responsible pet care and relief that Mittens was found in time.

One user wrote, “Thank you for helping sweet Mittens and thank God you found her in time!” Another shared, “I turned around just to make positively sure the empty carrier I saw was indeed empty.”

A third commented, “I’m so thankful this beautiful baby was saved from what could have been a terrible death. Welcome to a life of being loved, sweetheart.”
