Comedian Carlos Mencia Arrested on Multiple Tax Evasion Felony Charges
LOS ANGELES – Comedian Carlos Mencia was taken into custody Thursday on 12 felony counts related to failure to report and pay state taxes on over $8 million in income, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman described Mencia as “one of California’s biggest tax scofflaws” during a news conference unveiling the charges. The 58-year-old entertainer faces six felony counts for willfully failing to file personal income tax returns from 2019 through 2024, alongside six similar counts involving corporate taxes.
According to Hochman, Mencia owes more than $300,000 in unpaid state taxes on earnings totaling $8.7 million. Following his arrest at his Los Angeles residence around 7 a.m., Mencia was held on $250,000 bail and is scheduled for his initial court appearance on Monday. If convicted on all counts, he could face over 11 years in prison in addition to repaying the tax debt with accrued interest.
These charges mark the inaugural case brought by the newly established Business Tax Fraud Unit, created by Hochman earlier this year to target complex tax violations. Authorities noted Mencia had paid taxes regularly prior to 2019 but failed to respond to 78 state notices regarding delinquent payments. The investigation currently pertains solely to state taxes, with no updates on any federal inquiries.
Born Ned Arnel Holness in Honduras and raised in East Los Angeles, Mencia gained fame in the 1990s and early 2000s as a stand-up comic known for his humor addressing race, class, and Latino identity. He gained further recognition with his Comedy Central series “Mind of Mencia” (2005-2008), which combined stand-up and sketch comedy. At the press conference, Hochman recalled a 2007 episode where Mencia remarked, “Maybe I’m different, but I think taxes are a good thing.”
Mencia’s career faced challenges amid accusations from fellow comedians alleging joke theft, a charge he has consistently denied while acknowledging that he may have unconsciously incorporated material from others. He discussed these allegations extensively on Marc Maron’s podcast and was notably confronted by Joe Rogan in a 2007 viral video.
Despite the legal troubles, Mencia continues to perform stand-up, with upcoming shows planned across Southern California and Las Vegas. His attorney has yet to issue a comment regarding the charges.
