Phil Mickelson’s future in professional golf appears increasingly uncertain as he faces significant challenges both on and off the course. The former PGA Tour star and current captain of HyFlyers GC in LIV Golf has seen limited play this season, reportedly due to a private family health issue. Meanwhile, LIV Golf itself is struggling financially, with funding beyond the 2026 season in doubt.
Golf writer Alan Shipnuck recently weighed in on Mickelson’s precarious position amid allegations of misconduct that led to his removal from a private club he frequented. Speaking on the Rich Eisen Show, Shipnuck highlighted the contrast between Mickelson and Tiger Woods in terms of their career longevity and opportunities.
“Phil’s body is still intact, unlike Tiger’s, who’s had multiple injuries,” Shipnuck noted. “But Tiger can still compete on the senior tour using a cart if needed.
Phil, however, faces a different reality because of his ties to LIV Golf. To play on the PGA or Senior Tour, he’d have to serve at least a year-long suspension and pay a hefty fine – and I don’t see him willing to do that.”
Shipnuck further explained that if LIV Golf folds, which appears increasingly possible, Mickelson could find himself without a professional platform. At 56, the hurdles to rejoining the PGA Tour would be substantial.
“If LIV disappears next year, Phil’s essentially a man without a country,” Shipnuck said. “Tiger, despite his health issues, remains welcome on the tours. I’d bet Tiger is more likely to push through a tournament, whereas Phil might simply have nowhere to play.”
This assessment comes amid a turbulent period for Mickelson. Reports recently surfaced that he was removed from The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe following allegations of inappropriate conduct toward a female club employee. The club issued a statement affirming its commitment to a safe and respectful environment and confirmed Mickelson’s membership had been revoked following an independent investigation.
In response, Mickelson’s defamation attorney, Tom Clare, asserted that the allegations are “squarely contradicted by objective, video evidence,” challenging the claims against the golf star.
As Mickelson navigates these personal and professional trials, the trajectory of his career remains uncertain, with his options narrowing amid ongoing controversy and the instability of LIV Golf.
