A member of the controversial group known as the Zizians has been formally charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of her parents at their Pennsylvania residence on her 30th birthday. Authorities believe she did not act alone, according to Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse.
Michelle Zajko, who has been held in a Maryland jail since February 2025 on unrelated charges, now faces murder, burglary, and conspiracy charges in the deaths of Rita and Richard Zajko. At a recent press conference, DA Rouse emphasized that while it is unclear if Michelle was the shooter, she was definitely involved with others responsible for the killings.
The tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Eve, when a neighbor’s doorbell camera captured a car arriving at the Zajko home in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania. Audio from the footage included a voice calling out “Mom!”
followed by panicked exclamations. The couple was found shot to death inside their home.
Michelle Zajko has denied any role in the murders, suggesting in court documents that her father may have killed her mother before taking his own life. In an April 2025 public statement titled “Open Letter to the World,” she asserted, “I didn’t murder my parents.”
Despite her claims, law enforcement has long considered her a key person of interest. The Zajkos’ deaths are part of a disturbing pattern linked to the Zizians, a group of young, highly intelligent individuals united by radical views on veganism, animal rights, gender identity, and artificial intelligence.
Since 2022, the Zizians have been associated with multiple violent incidents, including the death of a group member during an attack on a California landlord, the landlord’s subsequent killing, the Pennsylvania murders, and a 2025 highway shootout in Vermont that left a U.S. Border Patrol agent and a Zizian dead.
Michelle Zajko also faces charges related to providing the firearm used in the killing of Border Patrol Agent David Maland in January 2025. She was arrested in Maryland along with Daniel Blank and Jack “Ziz” LaSota, considered the group’s leader. Police responding to a complaint about suspicious activity on private property described the trio as having ties to the Zizians and indicated they would be questioned about crimes nationwide.
All three are charged with trespassing, illegal gun possession, and drug possession at the state level, while LaSota additionally faces a federal charge for illegal gun possession as a fugitive. A judge recently approved a defense motion for a competency evaluation in the federal case.
In court filings, LaSota’s legal team rejected the label “Zizian” and denied the existence of any cult. Meanwhile, Zajko claims the group’s arrest was an effort to undermine their ability to clear Teresa Youngblut, who is facing murder charges in Vermont and could face the death penalty if convicted.
At the time of her parents’ deaths, Zajko was residing in Vermont and was questioned by police soon after. She was briefly detained in Pennsylvania weeks later but released without charges. LaSota, who was staying at the same hotel, was charged with obstructing the homicide investigation and disorderly conduct.
DA Rouse noted that Michelle had been estranged from her parents for about a year before the killings. On the day of the murder, Rita Zajko had texted her daughter in an attempt to reconcile, but the message went unanswered. Hours later, at least two individuals entered the home, the lights turned on, and the couple was executed.
This case adds to the growing list of violent incidents associated with the Zizians, highlighting ongoing concerns about the group’s dangerous ideology and activities.
