Michigan Boys Death at 7 Sparks Charges Against Parents for Neglect

A Michigan couple faces serious charges, including second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture, following the death of their 7-year-old son, Casper O’Brien, who weighed 255 pounds at the time of his passing due to heart failure on November 4, 2025.

Authorities responded to a 911 call concerning Casper’s deteriorating health at the O’Brien family’s rundown home in Genesee County. Despite efforts to save him, the boy died from dilated cardiomyopathy, with morbid obesity cited as a contributing factor.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton condemned the parents’ neglect, stating, “This child endured cruel and extreme suffering caused by the willful neglect of his parents.” Leyton revealed that Casper had virtually no medical care, having seen a doctor only once, and never had a pediatrician.

The O’Briens also have a 5-year-old daughter, Illeana, who, along with Casper, had not attended school and rarely received medical attention. Their home was reportedly in a state of hoarding disorder. Strikingly, the couple had sought veterinary care for their dog the same morning Casper died.

“These children were invisible to government agencies. Child Protective Services had no record of them, and they were essentially hidden from public view,” Leyton added.

At 4 feet 2 inches tall, Casper’s weight was dramatically above the healthy range for his age and height, which typically falls between 50 and 73 pounds, according to CDC guidelines.

Damien O’Brien, 40, is employed in a position with health insurance coverage, raising further questions about the family’s circumstances.

A memorial site honoring Casper described him as a bright and joyful child who loved watching the show Super Monsters, especially the character Frankie Mash.

The couple remains in Genesee County Jail without bond, with their next court appearance scheduled for July 2. Authorities continue to investigate the extent of neglect and the tragic circumstances surrounding Casper’s death.
