The “Great American State Fair,” a White House-supported event, has officially opened but appears to be drawing fewer visitors than anticipated.
This 16-day celebration, organized by Freedom 250-a group endorsed by former President Donald Trump-is part of several activities marking the United States’ 250th anniversary. Notably, Freedom 250 operates independently from the bipartisan America 250 organization established by Congress in 2016.
Held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the fair showcases over 150 exhibits representing all 56 states and territories. Attractions include a Ferris wheel, military performances, and even a replica of Trump’s triumphal arch. Despite these features, attendance so far seems sparse.
Images shared on social media highlight the low turnout. FOX 5 DC anchor Homa Bash posted photos of exhibits from Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., prompting comparisons on the platform X to the widely criticized “Willy Wonka Experience” in Glasgow, Scotland. Some users labeled the fair’s turnout as “not quite Fyre Festival bad, but certainly Wonka Experience terrible,” drawing parallels to the infamous event that failed to meet expectations.
To recap for those unfamiliar, the Willy Wonka Experience was a ticketed event in Glasgow that promised an immersive candy-themed adventure inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic. Instead, attendees found a largely empty warehouse with minimal decorations, leading to its swift cancellation and widespread backlash over false advertising.
As for the Great American State Fair, reactions among visitors have been mixed. Alicia, an engineering teacher from Dallas, expressed disappointment, noting the event felt “lame” compared to the much larger and more vibrant fairs back home. She described feeling uncertain about what to do, citing the absence of usual fair staples.
Conversely, Nicole Fitzgerald, visiting from Idaho, described the experience as “really fun” and appreciated exploring the Idaho booth alongside others representing various states.
While the fair continues, organizers face the challenge of living up to the high expectations surrounding this milestone celebration amid lukewarm crowd response.
